Supporting Transportation Choices
April 11th, 12:30-3pm
Afterparty, 3-4pm

Register here by April 1st

  • What will I be doing?

Volunteers will support Sustain Charlotte’s efforts to make our streets safer and more equitable by assisting us with a walkability audit. We’ll walk along a pre-planned route as a group and record observations about how well the street meets the needs of all people who use it. We’ll take a closer look at the condition of sidewalks, lighting, bus stops, intersections, ability of pedestrians to cross the street, and much more. The results of the audit will be used by Sustain Charlotte to help the neighborhood advocate for investments that will make the street safer and ultimately, reduce the need to drive a car.

Why an audit? The city of Charlotte has adopted a goal that 50% of trips will be taken in a way other than driving alone by 2040. More people walking, biking, and riding public transit means fewer carbon emissions and healthier air, as well as more equitable access to opportunity. Yet most of Charlotte’s streets were designed at a time when the needs of non-drivers were not incorporated into the planning process. Walkability audits are a valuable tool to help communities (schools, neighborhoods, workplaces, etc.) begin conversations about mobility needs and share the results with community leaders.

  • Where do I go?

1100 S Mint St, Suite 208, CLT 28203

  • Where should I park?

There is a small parking lot, but volunteers should carpool if possible.

  • What should I bring/wear?

Participants should dress for the weather (hat, sunscreen, sunglasses), wear comfortable walking shoes, and bring a filled reusable water bottle.

  • What will be provided by the host?

Sustain Charlotte will provide custom audit forms, clipboards, and pens.

  • Any special considerations?

This activity includes about 1.5 miles of slow walking. We can accommodate accessibility issues with advance notice.

  • What if it rains?

This is a rain or shine event. In the case of inclement weather, the workday will resume the following day, Fri. April 12, 12:30-3pm.

  • Any more questions?

Contact your team representative for any questions leading up to the event.
