Market & Farm Prep
April 10, 12:30-3pm
Afterparty, 3-4pm

Register here by April 1st

  • What will I be doing?

Volunteers will be moving stacked firewood in preparation for the building of our onsite Farmers Market. This is also the time of year when we may be reapplying mulch through out the gardens grounds, putting it around young perennials, weeding, and clearing the walking trail of its leaves.

  • Where do I go?

2080 Sawmill Creek Parkway, Durham, NC 27712

  • Where can I park?

Parking is available on site as well as on the street.

  • What should I bring/wear?

Participants should wear closed-toe shoes, and bring gloves and a refillable water bottle.

  • What will be provided by the host?

UCAN will provide shovels, pitch forks, wheel barrows, tools, gloves, water, snacks.

  • Any special considerations?

This is a reclaimed farmstead former plantation. To allow time for a brief tour or walk to the river would be rewarding. The recently repurposed Millhouse is accessible, with bathroom and other amenities.

  • What if it rains?

This is a rain or shine event. In the case of inclement weather, the workday will resume on Fri. April 25th, 12:30-3pm.

  • Any more questions?

Contact your team representative for any questions leading up to the event.

Learn More About Urban Community AgriNomics (UCAN)

Growing Communities One Seed at a Time

UCAN’s mission is to improve the health and wellbeing of our community. Our purpose is to provide education and training on healthy lifestyles, seed-to-table food preparation and preservation, hands on Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math (STEAM) and agriculture. They empower families and individuals by providing resources to grow their own healthy food using sustainable practices in a supportive environment. UCAN’s mission is to reduce food insecurity, reduce and/or reverse preventable health risk factors, to increase academic success and to increase exposure to career opportunities in the field of agriculture. They believe in sustainable agriculture that embraces the richness of the earth in all of its wonders. The foundation of UCAN is rooted in embracing the diversity of our total community, in creating equity, especially human equity, among disenfranchised individuals, in the acquisition of the skills and tools needed to build resiliency.

Engagement Opportunities:

Volunteers are always welcomed and needed. This is especially true now that we have a high tunnel. We need help in preparing the tunnel for planting. Ask about ways to get involved during your volunteer project!
