Food Reclamation & Distribution
April 11th, 12:30-3pm
Afterparty, 3-4pm

Register here by April 1st

  • What will I be doing?

For this project, we will work with a local produce distributor to bring fresh, edible produce that would otherwise go to waste to our Charlotte and Durham locations. Volunteers will meet at the SoSA office in Duke Memorial UMC to make vegetable bags for distribution to community hunger relief organizations for the upcoming gleaning season. Volunteers will bag the produce (likely potatoes) into 10 lb bags and then load vehicles from community agencies for them to take back. We would expect the volunteers to bag about 15,000 lbs of produce, which is the equivalent of 60,000 servings. All this produce would be diverted from the landfill to the homes of people who are struggling to have enough fresh, nutritious produce.

This produce is made available because the farm or produce distributor has more than they are able to sell, or the produce does not meet the aesthetic requirements of the buyer (size, shape, color). This “ugly produce” is perfectly good to eat, but gets passed over in our current food system. The Society of St. Andrew works with these suppliers to reclaim this produce to support the more than 1.2 million North Carolinians who struggle to have enough food to eat.
