Excess Food Reclamation & Distribution
April 11th, 12:30-3pm
Afterparty, 3-4pm
For this project, we will work with a local produce distributor to bring fresh, edible produce that would otherwise go to waste to our Charlotte and Durham locations. Volunteers will re-package this bulk produce for distribution to community hunger-relief organizations. Volunteers will bag the produce (likely potatoes) into 10 lb bags and then load vehicles from community agencies for them to take back. We would expect the volunteers to bag about 15,000 lbs of produce, which is the equivalent of 60,000 servings. All this produce would be diverted from the landfill to the homes of people who are struggling to have enough fresh, nutritious produce.
This produce is made available because the farm or produce distributor has more than they are able to sell, or the produce does not meet the aesthetic requirements of the buyer (size, shape, color). This “ugly produce” is perfectly good to eat, but gets passed over in our current food system. The Society of St. Andrew works with these suppliers to reclaim this produce to support the more than 1.2 million North Carolinians who struggle to have enough food to eat.
Barbee Farms, 1000 Shelton Rd. NW, Concord, NC 28027
Plenty of parking available in paved lots.
Participants should bring a filled reusable water bottle, gloves, and a hat; and wear clothes and shoes that can get dirty. Volunteers should also bring a camping chair or ground blanket to relax at the afterparty as seating is limited!
Produce bags and produce.
We can find roles for anyone! All the volunteers will see their direct impact on the community.
This is a rain or shine event. In the case of inclement weather, the workday will resume the following day, Fri. April 12, 12:30-3pm.
