First Place
First-Generation College Graduate, Appalachian State, NC
First in Flight” was selected as a play on words in numerous ways. Firstly, it is a theme for our state thanks to the Wright Brothers flight at Kill Devil Hills, NC. Secondly, it ties to the bird of prey featured in Matthew’s piece, which is the silhouette of a red shouldered hawk. Thirdly, it ties to the Appalachian Mountains which are depicted in the background of the image.
Second Place
8th Grader, NC
All parts in the picture come raw in nature, many of them as ways to help each plant continue the life cycle. The pinecone helps our state tree to reproduce, having seeds underneath its many scales. The gumballs have a similar purpose for the Sweetgum tree, protecting its seeds that can actually feed 25 species here in North Carolina! The pollen clusters from the oak tree help the tree to germinate with others in order for the tree to reproduce. The azalea flower aids the plant in the joining of the pollen and the plant’s sperm. Without each of these things, the world around us would be much different.

The mountains are calling, the sun is slowly rising. The clouds, still low, gently kiss the trees surrounding a peaceful mountain lake. The birds are chirping sweetly, a crisp breeze drifting through the warm morning air caresses your face, and the sound of the lake lapping up against the kayak creates a knowing rhythm. The world around you is still; everything is uncomplicated and so alive. This experience is the benefit of hard work and dedication to protect our land, water, air, and wildlife. It is the continuous mission and the goal for all those who live and breathe on this planet we call home.
